Part of our complete guide: scale a vending machine business.
Cantaloupe Seed is not one product. It is four, sold under one name, and Cantaloupe draws a hard line through the middle of them at roughly 200 machines: Seed Pro above that line, Seed Cashless+ below it, with Seed Markets for micro markets and Seed Live thrown in free with a Cantaloupe card reader. Picking the wrong one is the expensive mistake, so start by working out which side of the line you are on.

What follows is read off Cantaloupe’s own product pages on 9 September 2026, with the sources listed at the bottom. Where Cantaloupe does not publish something (and pricing is mostly one of those things) this post says so rather than guessing. We build vending management software adjacent to this category and not inside it, which is a bias worth naming up front: we do not compete with Seed on telemetry, because we do not do telemetry at all.
The four products, in the order you will meet them
Seed Live is the entry point and it is free, in a specific sense. Cantaloupe’s help centre describes it as a free device management system that comes with your Cantaloupe card reader. It gives real-time device status and connectivity tracking through telemetry. It isn’t a route platform. Think of it as the dashboard for your readers rather than software for your business.
Seed Cashless+ is the small-operator tier. Cantaloupe’s page for it talks about operations under 200 machines and small to medium sized operators, and specifically references what happens if you have more than five machines. It adds machine-level prekitting, real-time alerts, and the Seed Driver mobile app with route stops populated automatically. Worth noticing what is missing: the dynamic scheduling language on this page is static. Route stops get populated for you, but nothing claims to reorder your week around what actually sold.
Seed Pro is the enterprise product, and Cantaloupe says so out loud: it is described for enterprise-level operators with more than 200 vending machines or multiple micro market locations. This is where the real machinery lives. Prekits generated per machine off live machine-level inventory, automatically updated planograms, dynamic or interval or static scheduling, service schedules generated off geographic data, a Seed Warehouse mobile app for purchases and transfers and warehouse counts, a separate pick-to-light style system called Seed Pick Easy, and an AI assistant called Seed Copilot that answers questions as tables and charts.
Two Seed Pro numbers Cantaloupe publishes are worth repeating because they are the whole pitch: driver routes reduced from ten to four on average, and bring-backs cut by up to 70%. Read those as vendor claims rather than as your results. The mechanism behind them is real though, and it is the reason a big route buys this class of software: if the software knows what sold, it knows what to load and which machines to skip.
Seed Markets is the micro market and hybrid-route product. One pre-pick list across every vertical, snack racks and coolers scheduled individually, dynamic scheduling, warehouse replenishment, and P&L reports. If you run vending and markets and office coffee off the same truck, this is the one that stops you running three systems.
What Seed does not do, and nobody hides it
We read the Seed Pro, Seed Cashless+, Seed Markets and Seed Live pages plus the products index looking for one specific thing: any feature for finding or signing a new location. There is none. No prospecting, no lead lists, no contract generation, nothing that touches the part of the business where you do not yet have the building.
The fastest way to test this in your own ZIP is the free location finder. Search once, see which businesses sit within a few miles, and reveal five contacts for nothing. It will not tell you who says yes, but it saves the afternoon you would spend building the list by hand.
That isn’t a criticism, it’s the shape of the whole category. Every platform in the vending management software comparison starts at the moment a machine is already installed somewhere. Seed is unusually good at the part after that. It has nothing to say about the part before it.
One smaller absence: the word DEX does not appear on the Seed product pages we read. Cantaloupe describes 24/7 machine-level monitoring and smart alerts for bill jams, coin jams and power failures, which is functionally what you want, but if DEX-specific compatibility with a particular machine matters to you, ask sales directly instead of inferring it.
Picture the machines paying you while you sleep
That’s the real promise of vending — income that doesn’t cost you your time, and a life on your own terms. VendBuddy turns this guide into a step-by-step plan so you actually build it instead of just reading about it. Start free today.
Start building free →What it costs
Cantaloupe does not publish software prices. Its pricing page publishes three ways to buy hardware, and that is genuinely useful, so here it is verbatim in substance. Buy outright: competitive card reader prices, monthly service fees apply. Finance: fixed monthly payment upon credit approval, monthly service fees apply. Or Cantaloupe ONE, described as $0 upfront costs with fixed monthly bundled fees and an extended warranty during the agreement.
The number Cantaloupe doesn’t print is the one you need, which is what the bundled monthly fee actually is. Every software CTA routes to a sales conversation. Budget for a demo call and go in with your machine count, your micro market count and your card reader situation, because those three facts decide which of the four products you get quoted.
For what it is worth, our own card reader comparison has operator-quoted Cantaloupe reader figures in the 2026 card reader guide, and a separate honest look at their glass-front smart cooler in the Cafe Cooler review. Those numbers came from operators, not from the vendor site, which is a different standard of evidence and worth treating as such.
The ownership change nobody told you about
If you are signing a multi-year agreement in late 2026, know who you are signing with. 365 Retail Markets states on its own about page that Cantaloupe, Inc. was acquired by 365 Networks in 2026. That makes Cantaloupe and 365 part of the same corporate family, and it puts Parlevel in an interesting spot too: Parlevel’s own site never states an owner, but every page footer we fetched carries an @365rm.com contact address.
None of that changes what the software does this month. It does change how much weight to put on a roadmap promise, and it is a fair thing to ask about on the demo call. Consolidation in this category has a habit of quietly retiring the smaller product.
Who Seed is for
Above 200 machines, or running vending plus markets plus coffee off one operation, Seed Pro or Seed Markets is a legitimate default and the ten-routes-to-four claim is the reason. Under 200 machines and already on Cantaloupe readers, Seed Cashless+ is the low-friction answer because you are half onboarded already. Under five machines, take the free Seed Live that came with your reader, keep your spreadsheet, and spend nothing else. A prekitting engine cannot help an operator who can hold the whole route in their head.
Seed is a bad fit if you are shopping for a published price, if your route is small and your real problem is empty weeks rather than messy ones, or if you want one login for both the business development side and the operations side. On the last one, nothing in this category does both.
How VendBuddy fits alongside it
We do the job Seed does not. VendBuddy takes a ZIP code and returns the businesses around it scored on property category, review volume as a traffic proxy and headcount, names the job title that decides at each one, unlocks the actual person for a credit, writes the pitch for that specific building, tracks it through a five-stage pipeline, and drafts the placement agreement when they say yes. Then it runs a P&L off your real product costs.
Most first agreements are two pages, not twenty. The contracts walkthrough lays out the clauses that actually matter for the placement agreement, including the termination language operators forget about until they need it.
What we do not do: read DEX, sell hardware, process payments, generate prekit sheets, or schedule a route off telemetry. If you have 250 machines you need Seed and you may also want us, because the two tools touch different weeks of the same business. If you have four machines and want fourteen, we are the more useful purchase this quarter and Seed Live is already free.
The rest of the category is laid out platform by platform on vending management software, and the ranked-by-stage version is the best vending management software for 2026. If Seed and Parlevel are your shortlist, the Parlevel write-up is the sibling to this one.
FAQ
What is Cantaloupe Seed?
Seed is Cantaloupe’s vending management software line: Seed Live for device monitoring, Seed Cashless+ for operations under 200 machines, Seed Pro for enterprise routes above 200 machines, and Seed Markets for micro markets and hybrid routes. All four sit on top of Cantaloupe card readers and telemetry.
How much does Cantaloupe Seed cost?
Cantaloupe does not publish software prices. Its pricing page publishes three hardware purchase models, including Cantaloupe ONE at $0 upfront with a fixed bundled monthly fee, but not the fee amount. Every software price comes from a sales conversation, so go in knowing your machine count and reader situation.
Is Seed Live really free?
Cantaloupe’s help centre describes Seed Live as a free device management system that comes with your Cantaloupe card reader. So it is free in the sense that a car radio is free. You are buying the reader and the monthly service fee that goes with it, and Seed Live is the dashboard on top.
Do I need Seed Pro or Seed Cashless+?
Cantaloupe answers this on its own pages: Seed Pro is described for operators with more than 200 vending machines or multiple micro market locations, and Seed Cashless+ for operations under 200 machines. If you are near the line, the practical difference is dynamic scheduling and the warehouse tooling, both of which are Seed Pro.
Does Cantaloupe Seed help me find vending locations?
No. We checked the Seed Pro, Seed Cashless+, Seed Markets and Seed Live pages and the products index, and none claims a feature for finding or signing new accounts. That is true of every platform in this category, not just Cantaloupe. It is the reason VendBuddy exists as a separate tool.
Is Cantaloupe still independent?
No. 365 Retail Markets states on its own about page that Cantaloupe, Inc. was acquired by 365 Networks in 2026. If you are about to sign a multi-year agreement, ask directly about roadmap commitments for whichever Seed product you are buying.
Every Cantaloupe claim above is read off the vendor’s own public pages, fetched 9 September 2026: cantaloupe.com/products/software/seed-pro/, /seed-cashless-plus/, /seed-markets/, /seed-live/, cantaloupe.com/help-center/for/seed-live/, cantaloupe.com/products/ and cantaloupe.com/pricing/. The ownership statement is from 365retailmarkets.com/about-us/, fetched the same day. Operator-quoted reader pricing is from our own card reader guide and is not a vendor-published figure. Vendors change their sites; confirm anything here that would change your decision.
