Base44 Review for Small Business (2026): Credits, SEO, Limits

The 30-second version
  • Base44 is an AI app builder: you describe what you want and it builds the pages, a database and logins, so it shines for forms, calculators and trackers.
  • As of September 2026, Base44 is free to start (25 message credits a month, up to 5 apps); paid plans run $16 to $160 a month billed annually.
  • Typing prompts spends credits; editing text or layout by hand in the visual editor does not, according to Base44's credits docs.
  • SEO basics are handled for you (sitemap, robots.txt, llms.txt, per-page titles), but a custom domain is what lifts your score, and it starts on the $16 Starter plan.
  • Base44 is owned by Wix since June 2025. Pick Base44 for a custom tool; pick Wix for a polished brochure site with bookings.

This Base44 review for small business owners comes down to one question: do you need a website, or do you need a small piece of software with a website on top? Base44 builds the second kind. You describe an app in plain English and it writes the pages, a database and a login system. For a vending operator, that means a machine-request form that stores every lead, a commission calculator for property managers, or a restock log, built in an afternoon without a developer.

Part of our complete guide: how to find vending machine locations.

Two things to know up front. First, Base44 is owned by Wix, which announced the acquisition in June 2025 for about $80 million plus earn-outs (source: the Wix press room). We link to both products and may earn a commission from either, so read the trade-offs below rather than taking our word for which is better. Second, timing. Most new operators should set up a Google Business Profile first and build a site around machine three to five, as we argue in do vending machine businesses need a website. Specialty routes often need one sooner.

What does Base44 actually build?

Base44 calls itself a no-code AI platform. On its pricing page it says you describe what you need and it builds "the full thing: frontend, backend, database, user auth, payments." In practice, a first prompt gives you a working app with pages you can click through, a data table behind any form, and a dashboard where you see the records.

It also builds plain websites. Base44's own docs list business sites, landing pages, portfolios and booking or contact pages as common builds, and they note that simple sites start as a single page until you ask for more. That matters for expectations. You do not pick from a template gallery the way you do on Wix. You write a prompt, look at what comes back, and refine it.

The difference shows up the moment you need logic. Ask for "a form where property managers request a vending machine, with an admin page listing every request and a status column," and you get the form, the table and the admin page in one go. On a traditional site builder, the same thing means a form app, a spreadsheet and some glue.

What does Base44 cost as of September 2026?

These are the list prices on base44.com/pricing as of September 2026, billed annually. Base44 says yearly billing saves 20% over monthly.

What does Base44 cost as of September 2026 (Message credits / month): Free 25, Starter 100, Builder 250, Pro 500, Elite 1,200

PlanPriceMessage credits / monthWhat it adds
Free$025Core features, up to 5 apps, database, login, analytics
Starter$16/mo100Unlimited apps, in-app code edits, connect your own domain
Builder$40/mo250Free domain for a year, GitHub integration, choice of AI model
Pro$80/mo500More credits, early access to beta features
Elite$160/mo1,200Most credits, premium support

Each plan also includes a separate pool of integration credits (100 on Free, 2,000 on Starter, 10,000 on Builder). Base44 says there are no hidden fees, but third-party services you connect, such as Stripe or an email provider, bill you on their own pricing.

For a small business site, the real floor is Starter. The free plan is fine for testing, but it lives on a base44.app address, and Base44's SEO docs say apps on a Base44 subdomain are treated as staging sites by search engines. A custom domain is the single biggest SEO fix, and that begins at $16 a month.

How do Base44 credits work?

This is the part most reviews skip. Base44 uses two kinds of credits. Message credits are spent when you prompt the AI to plan, change or fix something. Integration credits are spent when your live app uses a built-in service, like sending an email or generating an image.

Base44's credits documentation gives rough ranges: about 0.5 credits for a simple text or visual change, about 1 for improving a small feature, about 2 for adding a module with new data and logic, and 3 to 4 for app-wide changes. The docs also say manual edits in the visual editor, like dragging elements or typing over text, do not use credits. The built-in SendEmail service costs about 1 integration credit per email.

What that means for a real month is our rough estimate, not a Base44 figure: building a five-page site with a request form can easily take 30 to 60 prompts once you count the back-and-forth, which is more than the free plan's 25. After launch, most months you will barely prompt at all. The practical habit is to use the AI for structure and logic, then fix wording by hand. There is also a Discuss mode for brainstorming that the docs say uses fewer credits.

Is Base44 good for SEO?

Better than you would expect from an app builder. Base44's SEO and GEO docs describe a dashboard that scans your app and gives a Low, Moderate or High score with a checklist. It generates a sitemap, a robots.txt file and an llms.txt file for AI crawlers, adds structured data for your business details, FAQs and breadcrumbs, and lets you edit the title and description of every page. Each page has a toggle to keep it out of search.

There are gaps compared with Wix. The AI Visibility report, which shows which AI assistants read your pages, is only on Builder and above. There is no blog platform with years of plugins and guides behind it. And no tool will rank a thin page for you.

What ranks a local service business is one clear page per real intent, a Google Business Profile that points at it, and reviews. We learned the template trap the hard way: vendbuddy.io once published 613 near-identical city pages and Google treated them as thin. On Base44 it would be easy to prompt your way into the same mistake, so write a city page only where you actually service machines. Our vending website SEO guide covers the rest.

Do you own the code and data?

Base44's pricing FAQ says yes: "You own everything you build on Base44: your code, your data, your users." It adds that two-way GitHub sync exports the full source to your own repository at any time. The catch is the plan table. GitHub integration is listed on Builder ($40/month) and up, not on Starter. There is also a developer CLI with an eject command that downloads a project's code.

Owning the code is not the same as running it somewhere else easily. The exported app still expects Base44's backend for its database and logins, so moving off the platform is a developer job. For most owners the practical point is simpler: your leads live in a table you can view and export, not in someone else's CRM.

Where Base44 is strong

Custom tools with no developer. A quote calculator, a lead-scoring intake, a route checklist your helper fills out on a phone. These are hard or pricey on a normal site builder and routine on Base44.

Data and permissions are built in. You can tell the AI "anyone can submit a request, only admins can read them," and its docs say it sets the matching rules. You can also review them table by table.

The entry price is low, and paying $16 a month gets you a custom domain, unlimited apps and 100 message credits, which is plenty once the build is done.

Where Base44 falls short

Design takes more work. Output is clean but generic, and getting a polished marketing look usually takes more prompting than choosing a Wix template.

Prompts can break things. A later prompt that renames a field can stop an earlier form from saving. You fix it by asking the AI, which spends credits, or by editing code yourself.

Several useful features sit on Builder. Scheduled and data-triggered automations, the Resend email integration and external custom integrations are all listed as Builder and above in Base44's email docs. Emailing someone who has not signed up to your app, such as a confirmation to the person who filled out your form, needs a paid plan plus a verified custom domain.

It is a young product. The ecosystem of tutorials, freelancers and add-ons is small next to Wix or WordPress, and features change often. Screenshots in a guide from last spring may not match what you see today.

Base44 is not for you if you want a finished, designer-looking brochure site with zero tinkering, or if you need appointment booking with reminders and payments out of the box. Our Wix review for small business covers that side.

A vending example: what to build on Base44 first

Say you run eight machines in one metro area and want inbound requests from office managers and property managers. Here is a sensible first build, in order.

  1. A one-page site: what you place (snacks, drinks, micro markets), the area you cover, photos of your own installs, and a clear "request a machine" button.
  2. The request form itself: business type, headcount, hours, address and contact, saved to a table with a status column. We walk through this step by step, with prompts, in how to build a request-a-machine form with Base44.
  3. An email to you on every new request, so nothing sits unseen.
  4. Later, a simple commission estimator a property manager can play with. This is where Base44 earns its keep over a normal site builder.

A site brings inbound: people who search and find you. The other half is outbound, which is where the Lead Finder in VendBuddy fits, alongside the cold email scripts for vending contracts. Your cold emails land better when there is a real site to link to.

Is Base44 worth it, and which plan should you start with?

Start on the free plan and build the one thing you care about most, usually the request form. If it works the way you want within a few evenings, move to Starter at $16 a month to connect your domain and publish. Most small businesses never need more than that. Move up to Builder only if you want GitHub sync, automations, or the free domain included.

If that sounds like your kind of tool, start a free Base44 app here and give yourself one weekend with it. If you would rather pick a template and type over the words, Wix is the easier path; Wix's free plan lets you build the whole site before paying. Plenty of operators end up with both: a Wix marketing site and a Base44 request tracker linked from it. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Base44 free?

Yes, there is a free plan with 25 message credits a month and up to 5 apps, according to Base44's pricing page as of September 2026. It runs on a base44.app address; connecting your own domain starts on the $16-a-month Starter plan, billed annually.

Who owns Base44?

Wix. Wix announced the acquisition in June 2025 for an initial consideration of about $80 million plus earn-out payments through 2029, according to the Wix press room. Base44 still runs as its own product with separate pricing.

Can I export my code from Base44?

Base44 says you own your code and data, and that two-way GitHub sync exports the full source to your own repository. GitHub integration is listed on the Builder plan ($40 a month billed annually) and above. Running the app elsewhere still takes developer work because it relies on Base44's backend.

Do edits use Base44 credits?

Prompts to the AI use message credits, roughly 0.5 for a small text change up to 3-4 for an app-wide change, per Base44's credits docs. Manual edits in the visual editor, like typing over text or dragging elements, do not use credits.

Is Base44 good for a small business website?

It is good when the site needs a custom tool, like a request form with a lead list or a quote calculator. For a polished brochure site with online bookings and deep SEO settings, Wix is usually the easier choice.
