The 30-second version
  • Start by buying from a US importer or distributor; they have already handled FDA prior notice and usually English labeling.
  • FDA requires prior notice for all food imported or offered for import into the US, and labels need required information in English (FDA).
  • Check every product for the nine major allergens, including sesame, which was added effective January 1, 2023.
  • Gross margins are often 45% to 65% (estimates), but shipping heavy drinks eats profit, so sell boxes and bundles.
  • An exotic snack vending machine with a QR code to the store gives you both sales and product research.

To start an exotic snack business on Shopify, you need three things lined up before the first order: a supplier who can prove the product is legal to sell in the US, labels that meet FDA rules, and a price that still leaves margin after shipping. The store itself is the easy part. Shopify's Basic plan is $39 a month billed monthly or $29 billed yearly as of September 2026 (Shopify pricing page), and the FDA requires prior notice for all food imported or offered for import into the United States.

Exotic snacks means imported chips, candy, sodas and noodles from Japan, Korea, Mexico, the UK, Taiwan and elsewhere, plus limited flavors that never got US distribution. The category grew on TikTok unboxing videos and on the "weird snack" vending machines you now see in malls. This guide covers how to source, what the FDA rules mean for a small seller, rough margins, and how an online store pairs with a machine.

Where exotic snack stores get their stock

There are three sourcing routes, and they carry very different amounts of paperwork.

Buy from a US importer or distributor. This is where almost every new store should start. The importer already brought the product in, filed the FDA paperwork, and in most cases applied an English sticker label. You buy by the case, pay more per unit, and carry far less legal risk. Ask any distributor for a sample invoice, their minimum order, and whether their products carry English labeling with a US importer's name on it.

Buy from Asian or Latin grocery wholesalers. Regional wholesalers that supply grocery stores will often sell to a small business with a resale certificate. Prices are good, selection is wide, and the labeling is usually already done because grocery stores face the same rules.

Import directly. Buying pallets from an overseas supplier gives the best unit price and the most work. You or your customs broker become responsible for the import steps covered in the next section. Most people should wait until they know which products sell before trying this.

If you already run vending machines, you know the club-store math. Our Vistar vs Costco vs Sam's vs Walmart comparison shows how price per unit changes with the channel, and the same logic applies to import distributors.

FDA import and labeling basics for small sellers

This section is general information, not legal advice. Read the FDA pages linked here, and talk to a customs broker or food attorney before you import directly.

Prior notice. According to the FDA's prior notice page, prior notice must be provided for all food for humans and animals that is imported or offered for import into the United States (21 CFR Part 1, Subpart I). If you buy from a US distributor, they handled this. If you import yourself, your broker usually files it.

English labels. Food sold in the US needs its required label information in English, including the product name, net quantity, ingredient list, the name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer or distributor, and a Nutrition Facts panel unless an exemption applies. The FDA Food Labeling Guide is the reference. Many imported snacks arrive with a sticker label placed over the original packaging for this reason.

Allergens. US law names nine major food allergens: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame, per the FDA food allergies page. Sesame was added effective January 1, 2023. Imported snacks are a common source of undeclared allergens, so check every label against that list yourself.

Banned or restricted ingredients. Some candies and drinks that are legal abroad use colorings, additives or ingredients that are restricted in the US. Products with alcohol, CBD, or meat are also regulated separately. If you can't confirm a product is compliant, don't list it. One recall notice or a customs hold on a product you already advertised costs far more than a skipped SKU.

Direct importers may also fall under FDA's Foreign Supplier Verification Programs rule, which requires the importer to verify their foreign supplier's safety practices. That is another reason to buy from a US importer while you learn.

What margins look like (estimates)

The figures below are illustrative estimates for planning, not quotes. Your costs will depend on supplier, volume and shipping zone.

What margins look like (estimates) (Landed cost): Imported soda can $1.25 to $2.00, Japanese candy bag $1.50 to $3.00, Mystery snack box (15 to 20 items) $18 to $28

Item (estimate)Landed costOnline priceGross margin before shipping
Imported soda can$1.25 to $2.00$3.50 to $5.0050% to 65%
Japanese candy bag$1.50 to $3.00$4.00 to $7.0055% to 65%
Mystery snack box (15 to 20 items)$18 to $28$40 to $6045% to 60%

Shipping is where exotic snack stores lose money. A heavy box of sodas can cost more to ship than the drinks inside. That is why most successful stores sell curated boxes and bundles with a free-shipping threshold instead of single cans. Card fees also come off the top: 2.9% + 30¢ per online order on Shopify Basic, per Shopify's pricing page.

Add breakage, expired stock (imported snacks often reach you with less shelf life left), and packaging. A realistic net margin after those costs is much lower than the gross numbers above, so price with a cushion.

Setting up the Shopify store

Keep the first version small. Twenty products that you have tasted and photographed yourself beat two hundred supplier photos.

  1. Start a trial and pick a clean theme. Shopify's trial gives you 3 free days, then $1 a month for 3 months on most plans.
  2. Write product pages that answer the questions buyers ask: country of origin, flavor, size, allergens, and best-by window.
  3. Build two or three boxes (a starter box, a candy box, a drinks box) and make those the front page.
  4. Offer a subscription box once you have repeat buyers. Recurring revenue smooths out the lumpy one-off orders.
  5. Set shipping rules by weight so a 24-can order doesn't get the same rate as a candy bag.

Traffic comes from content. Taste-test videos, "snacks from one country" posts, and gift guides around holidays do the work that a busy lobby does for a vending machine.

Pairing the store with an exotic snack vending machine

This is where a vending operator has an edge. An exotic snack machine in a mall, arcade or college building puts your products in front of people every day, and every machine can carry a sticker with a QR code to the online store. The shopper who bought one ramune soda from the machine can order a box of twelve from their phone.

The machine also tells you what sells. Your machine sales data is free market research for the store: if a flavor sells out every week in the machine, stock more of it online. The reverse works too. Online bestsellers earn a slot in the machine.

We cover the products that tend to move in novelty machines in weird vending machine best sellers, and the social side in viral TikTok products for vending. For placing the machine itself, you still need a location, and the Lead Finder in VendBuddy pulls contacts for malls, colleges and other properties you want to pitch.

Who this business is not for

If you want low effort, pick something else. An exotic snack store means tasting, photographing, repacking and shipping, and inventory with a best-by date. People who dislike content creation will struggle, because the store gets almost no traffic without it. And if you are not willing to read labels carefully, the compliance side will eventually catch up with you.

It fits people who already enjoy the category, can post about it regularly, and ideally have a vending machine or pop-up table to sell through in person. If that is you, a small Shopify store plus one machine is a reasonable test with a limited downside.

Form the business, get a resale certificate so you don't pay sales tax on stock you resell, and set up sales tax collection in Shopify for your state. Many sellers form an LLC for liability; our guide on whether you need an LLC applies to snack stores too. Product liability insurance is worth pricing before you ship food to strangers.

Some states and cities also require a food business registration or permit even for prepackaged food sold from home storage. Call your state department of agriculture or health department and describe exactly what you plan to do. It is a short call that saves a bad surprise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need FDA approval to sell imported snacks?

FDA does not pre-approve most packaged foods, but imported food requires prior notice to FDA, and labels must meet US rules including English labeling and allergen declarations. Buying from a US importer means they handled the import steps. This is general information; check FDA guidance and a food attorney for your situation.

How much does it cost to start an exotic snack store on Shopify?

The Shopify Basic plan is $39 a month billed monthly or $29 billed yearly as of September 2026. Opening inventory for 20 to 30 products from a distributor might run a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars (estimate), plus packaging, a resale certificate and any local food registration.

Are exotic snack stores profitable?

They can be, but gross margins of roughly 45% to 65% (estimates) shrink after shipping, breakage, expired stock and card fees. Stores that sell curated boxes and subscriptions usually do better than stores selling single cans.

Can I put exotic snacks in a vending machine?

Yes, and many operators run exotic snack machines in malls, arcades and campuses. The same labeling rules apply. Add a QR code to the machine that links to your online store.
