The 30-second version
  • A laundry detergent vending machine costs about $759 to $1,258 for a 2 to 4 column coin box vender and about $4,100 to $5,600 for glass-front or electronic models (October 2026 list prices).
  • Coin-vend single-load boxes cost about $0.51 to $0.71 each by the case; a $1.50 to $2.00 vend price is the example used here.
  • At our example numbers a 4-column vender nets about $62 a month in a small store and about $390 in a busy one, after a 15% owner commission.
  • Check how the store takes payment first: a coin-only vender misses customers in card or app laundromats.

A laundry detergent vending machine costs roughly $760 to $1,260 for a basic 2 to 4 column coin box vender, and about $4,100 to $5,600 for a glass-front or electronic model with a bill acceptor or card reader. Single-load boxes cost the operator about $0.60 to $0.70 each by the case, so a $1.50 to $2.00 vend price leaves room for real margin, but only if the laundromat has enough customers who forget their soap.

A soap vender is one of the smallest machines in vending and one of the easiest to place. Nobody has to be talked into wanting detergent at a laundromat. The question is whether there are enough forgetful customers to make it worth your restock trips, and whether you or the owner keeps the money.

Why do laundry detergent vending machines work in laundromats?

They work because the buyer is stuck. Someone who forgot detergent has a basket of clothes, a machine waiting and no store next door. The Coin Laundry Association counts about 29,500 coin laundries in the United States, generating nearly $5 billion in gross revenue a year, and it lists vending as part of a typical store's "other income." Renters are the core customers, and many of them don't keep a full jug of detergent at home.

The flip side is volume. A soap vender sells one small item to a small share of customers, so it only pays where foot traffic is steady. A neighborhood store might see 40 to 70 customers a day, and a large busy one 150 or more, as we covered in laundromat vending and ATM add-on income.

Box vender or spiral merchandiser?

A column box vender holds stacks of single-load boxes and drops one per coin cycle. It is cheap, small, bolts to a wall or stand, and has almost nothing to break. The trade-off is that most basic models take coins only and sell one size of item per column. A glass-front spiral machine shows the products, holds bottles, bags and stain sticks, and usually takes bills and cards. It costs four to five times as much, so it makes sense in a big store that wants to sell more than soap.

Do you need a card reader?

Check how the store takes money before you buy. If the washers run on a card or an app, customers may not carry quarters, and a coin-only vender will miss them. In a store like that, either buy a model that accepts cards or confirm there is a bill changer nearby that customers actually use.

What should you stock in a laundry vending machine?

Stock the brands people already use at home, in coin-vend single-load packs. WebstaurantStore case prices in October 2026, as an example of what you will pay:

Product (coin-vend size)CaseCost each
Tide Professional single-load box156 for $94.99$0.61
Gain Original single-load box156 for $102.49$0.66
Persil Original liquid single-load box100 for $69.49$0.69
Bounce dryer sheets, 2-count box156 for $106.49$0.68
Downy liquid fabric conditioner box156 for $109.99$0.71
OxiClean 1 oz stain remover box156 for $79.99$0.51
Color-safe bleach packet, 2 oz100 for $58.99$0.59
Laundry bag, 27 x 48 in144 for $64.49$0.45

A sensible 4-column setup is one national-brand detergent, one free-and-clear detergent for sensitive skin, dryer sheets and either fabric softener or bleach. Watch which column empties first for a month, then give the winner two columns. Liquid packs leak if the boxes get crushed, so check the seal on every restock. You can also compare case prices on coin-vend detergent boxes before you reorder.

How much profit does a laundry detergent vending machine make?

Here is the math with example numbers. Inputs: an average vend price of $1.75, an average product cost of $0.62 (from the case prices above), a 15% commission to the laundromat owner if you are an outside operator, and a Vendmaster 494 at $1,159 plus one $94.99 case of starting stock ($1,253.99 all in). The buy rate (the share of customers who buy one item) is an assumption; count it yourself on a site visit.

StoreCustomers a dayBuy rateVends a monthGrossProductCommission 15%Net a monthPayback
Small406%72$126$44.64$18.90$62.46about 20 months
Medium608%144$252$89.28$37.80$124.92about 10 months
Busy15010%450$787.50$279.00$118.13$390.37about 3 months

How to read it: monthly vends are customers a day x 30 x buy rate (60 x 30 x 8% = 144). Net is gross minus product minus commission ($252 - $89.28 - $37.80 = $124.92). Payback is the $1,253.99 start-up divided by net. A small store barely covers your gas; a busy one pays the machine off in a season. If you own the laundromat, drop the commission column and the net goes up by that amount.

This is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice; figures are examples.

Do laundromat owners take a commission on soap vending?

Many do, and some would rather run the soap machine themselves. Soap is one of the few add-ons an owner can stock alone, because the machine is cheap and the product doesn't spoil. That shapes your pitch. You are not offering the owner something they can't do. You are offering to do the restocking, keep the brands right and fix jams so they don't have to. Offer a percentage of sales or a flat monthly fee, and put the restock schedule in writing.

If you are buying a laundromat rather than placing a machine in one, ask for the vending sales by month as part of your review. Our checklist for buying an existing laundromat covers which numbers to ask for.

Can you put a detergent vending machine in an apartment laundry room?

Yes, and it is often an easier yes than a laundromat. Apartment laundry rooms have a captive group of residents, there is usually no owner-run vender already on the wall, and the property manager can see it as an amenity. Traffic is lower than in a laundromat, so use a small 2 or 3 column coin vender and visit less often. Get the property manager's OK in writing, and check whether the laundry room equipment is run by an outside laundry company whose contract covers vending in the room.

Most first agreements are two pages, not twenty. The contracts walkthrough lays out the clauses that actually matter for the contract, including the termination language operators forget about until they need it.

How do you pitch a laundromat owner on a detergent vending machine?

Go on a busy weekend morning, buy something, and watch for 20 minutes. Count customers and note how many arrive without soap. Then ask for the owner, not the attendant. Keep the pitch short:

"I counted 30 people in the last hour, and four came in without soap. I'd like to put a four-column detergent machine by the folding tables. I stock it, I fix it, and you get a percentage of every sale. If it's not selling after 90 days, I take it out."

Most stores are run by owners who are hard to reach in person. Our guide on how to find laundromat owners to pitch shows where to find who owns the store, and how to get vending machines into laundromats covers the snack, drink and ATM pitch if you want to bundle them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sells best in a laundromat soap vending machine?

Name-brand single-load detergent boxes usually lead, followed by dryer sheets and fabric softener. Add a free-and-clear detergent for customers with sensitive skin. Track which column empties first for a month and give that product a second column.

Is a laundry soap vending machine worth it for a small laundromat?

Often only barely. At about 40 customers a day the example math in this guide nets around $62 a month after commission, which takes close to 20 months to pay off a $1,159 machine and its first case of stock. An owner who restocks it personally keeps more, since there is no commission.

How often do you restock a laundry detergent vending machine?

It depends on sales. A busy store selling a few hundred items a month may need a weekly visit; a small store or apartment laundry room can go two to four weeks. Check stock and coin box levels on every visit to set your own schedule.

Where can I buy coin vend laundry detergent boxes?

Restaurant and laundry suppliers sell them by the case, usually 100 or 156 boxes. In October 2026 Tide Professional single-load boxes listed at $94.99 for 156 at one supplier, about $0.61 each.
