Bitcoin ATM Near Me: How to Find One, What It Costs, and the Scam to Know

The fastest way to find a bitcoin ATM near you is CoinATMRadar, the independent map that plots crypto kiosks from every operator in one place. If you already know which network you want, Bitcoin Depot and CoinFlip each run their own store locators, and between those three you will surface nearly every machine in a US metro.

Before you drive anywhere, read the fees section below. Bitcoin ATMs are convenient and expensive, and the second half of that sentence is what catches people at the machine.

The maps

CoinATMRadar is the closest thing to a neutral directory. It is not run by any operator, it lists machines from all of them, and it shows what each kiosk supports: buy only, buy and sell, which coins. Start there, because an operator’s own locator will only ever show you that operator’s machines.

The two largest US networks are Bitcoin Depot and CoinFlip, and both publish store locators. Those are worth checking after CoinATMRadar if you want a specific network, since a first-party locator is usually more current about which machines are actually in service.

One habit worth building: call the host business before you go. A kiosk that shows on a map may be unplugged, out of cash, or sitting behind a counter in a store that closes at six.

Where the machines are

Convenience stores, gas stations, and smoke shops carry most of them. That is a placement decision rather than an accident: those businesses stay open late, handle cash all day, and have a couple of square feet by the door that were not earning anything.

Because the host is a small business, the kiosk inherits the host’s hours and habits. The machine is available when the store is, and the staff behind the counter usually know nothing about how it works beyond where the power cord goes.

Picture the machines paying you while you sleep

That’s the real promise of vending — income that doesn’t cost you your time, and a life on your own terms. VendBuddy turns this guide into a step-by-step plan so you actually build it instead of just reading about it. Start free today.

What to bring

Two things, and neither is obvious the first time. You need a place for the coins to land, meaning a crypto wallet address, usually presented to the machine as a QR code on your phone. Some operators will create a hosted wallet for you at the kiosk, which is convenient and means the operator holds the keys rather than you.

You also need identification, at least above a low threshold. These machines are regulated as money services businesses, so operators run identity checks: a phone number and a verification text for small amounts, and a scanned government ID above whatever ceiling that operator has set. Daily and per-transaction limits apply too, and they differ by network. Checking the operator’s published limits beats discovering them with $2,000 in your hand at a gas station counter.

The fees are the story

This is the part worth knowing before you stand in front of one. Bitcoin ATM fees run far above what a mainstream exchange charges, and double-digit percentages are common across the industry. On top of the stated fee, the machine quotes its own exchange rate, and that rate is typically worse than the market price you would see on an exchange app.

You are paying for immediacy and for cash. That trade can be worth it if cash is the only instrument you have, or if you need the transaction done in the next ten minutes. It is a poor deal if you are simply buying bitcoin and could have used an exchange from your couch for a fraction of the cost. Read the fee disclosure on the screen before you feed the machine anything.

One safety paragraph, and please read it

If somebody on the phone is telling you to deposit cash into a bitcoin ATM, it is a scam. Every time. No IRS agent, police officer, utility company, bank fraud department, sheriff, grandchild in trouble, or romantic interest you have not met will ever need you to do this. The reason scammers ask for it is that the transaction is fast and effectively irreversible once it confirms. Hang up, and call the agency or person back on a number you looked up yourself.

The other side of the kiosk

Somebody placed that machine, and the economics of doing so look a lot like classic vending: find a venue with the right foot traffic, negotiate a cut with the owner, keep the unit serviced. Our ATM business placement guide covers the surcharge math and the cash-float surprise that catches new operators. VendBuddy’s Lead Finder now includes a Bitcoin ATM machine type that maps the venue categories these kiosks actually land in, and Machine Finder matches machine types to a budget if you get that far.

This page is part of our find-a-machine series, which covers the fastest path to every common machine type.

FAQ

Is there one map with every bitcoin ATM on it?

CoinATMRadar is the closest, and it is independent of any single operator. It is still built from operator data and user reports, so treat a listing as a strong lead rather than a guarantee that the machine is powered on.

Why are bitcoin ATM fees so much higher than an exchange?

Cash handling, machine leases, host commissions, and compliance overhead all get priced into every transaction. Double-digit percentage fees are common, and the machine’s quoted exchange rate usually sits below market on top of that.

Can I sell bitcoin for cash at one?

Some machines support it and many do not. CoinATMRadar flags which direction each kiosk handles, so check before you make the trip.

CoinATMRadar, Bitcoin Depot, and CoinFlip are trademarks of their respective owners. VendBuddy is an independent operator-education site with no affiliation with, or endorsement by, any of them, and nothing here is financial advice.
