Vending machine permit and sales tax checker

Before the first machine goes in, you need to know three things for your state: how sales tax works on what you sell, which permits and licenses apply, and whether the health department or the city wants its own paperwork. Pick a state and this checker pulls together what our state and city guides record for it.

The data is the same research behind our 51 state guides and 718 city guides, verified against state revenue and health-department sources when each guide was written. 10 states have a full deep guide with step-by-step registration; 44 have a re-checked vape and tobacco statute with a link to the official text. Where we only have a city-level note, the result says which city it came from.

What applies in almost every state

How to use the result

  1. Copy it as a checklist and work down it in order: registration and the seller’s permit first, then health, then the city.
  2. Call the county health department once with your machine type and planogram. It settles the per-machine question no national guide can answer for your address.
  3. Look up the rate by address on the state revenue site before you price, since local rates stack on the state rate in many states.
  4. Open the city guide for where the machine will actually sit. Local business licenses and decals live there.

Questions people ask

Do I need a license to put a vending machine somewhere?

In most states there is no single vending license. You usually need a business registration, a sales-tax or seller’s permit and, for perishable food, a health permit. A few states do issue a vending-specific permit, and the checker shows it where our state guide records one.

Do vending machines charge sales tax?

Usually yes on at least part of what they sell, but the rules are state-specific: some states exempt food, some tax candy and soft drinks at a different rate, and many add local rates by address. Pick your state above for what our guide records, then confirm the current rate with your state revenue department.

Do I need a health permit for a snack machine?

Often not for sealed, shelf-stable snacks, and often yes for refrigerated or fresh food. It is usually the county or city health department that decides, which is why the checker shows the health notes from our researched city guides.

Can I sell vapes or tobacco from a vending machine?

Federal rules restrict tobacco and nicotine vending to places where no one under 21 is present at any time, and many states go further. Where we have re-checked a state statute it is linked in the result; otherwise the federal rule is the floor.

How current is this information?

It is the same data as our state guides, verified against state revenue and health sources when each city guide was researched. Tax rates and permit fees change, so treat the result as your checklist and confirm each item with the agency before you place a machine.
